Court sculptor Germain Pilon (c. 1525–1590) carved the marble Vierge de Douleur in 1586 for the tomb of Valentine Balbiani. Installed in a niche of Paris’ Église Saint-Paul-Saint-Louis, its flat back fit the tomb design while the swirling drapery conveyed Mary’s deep sorrow.
